Mordernism Residential Extension

Functions: Outdoor terrace, dining area, art studio, and wine cellar
Type: Renovation and addition
Location: Indiana, United States
Design: 2018

This project expands a 1967 modernist residence by adding a family dining space, daughter's art studio, and wine cellar. After analyzing the existing building's elevation and floor plan, I designed a connecting corridor to join the new and old spaces. Since the house stands isolated in the forest, I created a circular art studio that captures abundant natural light—providing stunning views while complementing the original building's form.

The new building serves as an addition to a classic structure. It may either physically connect to or stand separate from the existing building. However, the relationship between new and old should establish a harmonious and meaningful dialogue in both tangible and conceptual ways.

The light well extends through the building, seamlessly connecting the second-floor outdoor terrace, ground-floor dining space, and underground wine cellar.

The circular addition draws inspiration from the existing rectangular residence's façade and spatial rhythm. An outdoor walkway on the second floor connects the two spaces.

The 45-centimeter raised platform functions as both a leisure area and a source of natural light for the daughter's art studio beneath.

Water cascades freely from the roof terrace into the ground-level pool, creating a tangible flow that echoes the play of light in the original building.
