YING YANG: COVID-19

In the early stages of the pandemic, different cities responded to the virus in very different ways. I used visual forms to represent data, aiming to make the emotional and situational aspects behind the numbers more tangible. This project documents the pandemic period in Taipei, Shanghai, and Dongguan—three cities closely connected to my life—using visual language built around keywords such as “density,” “transmission,” “isolation,” and “contact.” Here, infection and non-infection are not opposites, but coexist as two states within the same system, like yin and yang. I used a rubbing-like effect to suggest that this unusual period, in time, becomes part of history.
I designed a custom typeface for this book, treating each letter as a visual element. The structure of the typeface, together with the images, forms the visual language of the book.
